A TV 'place' that hasn't changed, is Mayberry; from the Andy Griffith Show. The show was filmed in California, in various places, but based largely on Andy's recollection of his own hometown of Mount Airy, N.C.

Back when I was working, we had an office in Greensboro, N.C. and once in a while I'd take the longer route to it via Virginia. Coming south, you hit Mount and find all sorts of memories to the show. There is the Andy Griffith Museum, Police office and jail, courthouse and squad car.

Further south, you'll go through Pilot Mountain, mythically renamed Mount Pilot in the show. A lot of the town has been preserved just like in the TV show.
