I'm going to take the DeSoto today. I've owned Oldsmobile's but never a DeSoto so here I go!
My main dislike about the DeSoto is the massive front bumper compared to the diminutive rear appendage.
But I've never gotten used to the Olds's chrome eye make-up that stretches back to beyond its ears (center door) and then picks up with four chrome strips from there.
Thanks John. I didn't even have to see the pics to know I was going to choose the DeSoto as that Oldsmobile is way overwrought.
I'm not a fan of either car particularly but the DeSoto is much easier on the eyes than the Olds. The '58 is the least attractive Oldsmobile ever made IMHO.....same for GM's Buick. I'm not sure what GM was thinking with these two marques; especially considering how attractive their other cars were that year.
Definitely DeSoto!
My Uncle bought a brand-new '58 FireFlite 2-door hardtop in white with baby-blue spear. It was stunning, and it was FAST! And out of character for him to buy such a flashy car, it replaced his very plain-jane '51 Plymouth Cambridge 4-door sedan.

Exactly.

DeSoto, '57 - '58 are my favorites. '58 Olds ugly to my eyes.
I like them all for 1958, even though it was a recession year for the economy and automobiles. My Dad had a 1958 Bel Air, while one neighbor had a 1958 Pontiac Bonneville and another had a beautiful gleaming black 1958 Oldsmobile. Lol, what recession ?
DeSoto this go round. I would have thought Olds in the past but that DeSoto is an eye catcher. 👀

Neither is a favorite of mine but the DeSoto by a hair.
@moe-parr Wow Barry that was quite a giant leap your uncle took.
Exactly! The rumor going around the family was that he had a girlfriend on the side and wanted to impress her with his fancy new car...a 7-year old, bottom-of-the-line, 4-door Plymouth wouldn't do the trick

Without photos, I'd have picked OLDSMOBILE! After the beautiful '56 DeSoto, there styling went south in a hurry to my eyes. Though the '58 Oldsmobile is a Yacht, it's a beautiful one from front to back, top to bottom.
LMAO.... All it needs are some life preservers and an anchor to make it perfect !

Hello Bob,
By a hair or by a lack of a couple of pounds of chrome....lol ?
