I wonder if Doyle Dane Bernbach was doing the 2CV ad campaigns at the time. Not exactly like the VW ads but similarly quirky.

@paul-rouffal, they do have a similar feel about them. I wondered the same thing. Are any of your internet sleuths up for finding out?
