    Pronounced Tal bo-La go, this French automobile was an amalgam of the dying Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq companies. In 1934, Major Antony Lago shored up the anemic firm by focusing on the production of competitive racing machines. By 1936 the T150-C racing chassis was born. Lago was able to entice driver Ren? Dreyfus to leave Ferrari that year and head up the Talbot-Lago driving team for an attempt at the French Grand Prix at Montlhery. Against all odds the three cars finished eighth, ninth and tenth. The following year at the French Grand Prix, Talbot-Lago finished first, second, third and fifth. The marque was an international sensation. The Tear Drop Coup? was the union of Lago’s new racing chassis and Figoni et Falaschi’s coach design. Figoni’s wealthy clientele were instantly drawn to the Talbot’s racing success like moths to a flame. Figoni utilized the French curve to extreme, finishing the leading and trailing edgework in heavy chrome. This technique is also seen in such cars as the 1937 Delahaye 135 M Figoni et Falaschi Cabriolet. Applied to the Talbot-Lago’s flowing curves, this design became known as the Tear Drop Coup?.

    This static-display model is elegant. The shape, stance and finish are perfectly superb. I was honored to be a small part of the model’s beginning, talking at length with Alan Novak about the T-L’s variants and sharing my photos of this car. I loved it from afar until I photographed the genuine item at the 50th anniversary of the Concours D’Elegance at Pebble Beach. But Alan’s love of the car took him to new heights of research and accuracy. Believe me, it shows. This is a classic image of a classic car some have said is the most beautiful automotive design ever and that comes across faultlessly in this replica.
