    Review

When Jaap van Dijk launched Matrix Scale Models in early 2013, you just knew that he would find interesting and often unusual car models to create. One of his early models is the 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300c Kombi Wagon with a body by Binz, a German coachwork company. Binz is best known for constructing ambulances, funeral cars, and other commercial vehicles on Mercedes-Benz chassis.

The wagon was the idea of a Mrs. Folke who lived in New York, Paris, and Palm Beach. The Mercedes-Benz dealer in new York City ordered a 300c sedan and had it shipped from Stuttgart to Binz for this extensive modification. Mrs. Folke was so fond of her wagon that she had it shipped by air as she traveled to and from each of her homes. Since then the car has had several owners. The latest, Charlie Crawley, had it painted a midnight blue, in striking contrast to its red leather interior.

Matrix has spared no details in replicating this beautiful 1:43rd scale model of this very unusual car. The finish is an immaculate and flawless Midnight Blue and the rich red interior can be plainly seen through the windows. The chrome around the windows appears to be a little thick but actually all the pictures I have found of the car show that treatment to be accurate. The tail lights appear to be 190 SL lenses but, again, this is deliberate and accurate. All the correct Mercedes-Benz emblems, lights, splash guards, and handles are nicely replicated.

If your specialty is Mercedes-Benz, like me; station wagons; or you just like unusual cars, you won’t want to miss this one. Fortunately it is available from Legacy Motors for $89.97 or you may redeem it for 1285 points.
