Unlike the factory-backed Porsche efforts at Le Mans, the Zakspeed entry faced stiff competition from the dominant Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, which was the class of the field that season. Despite its advanced aerodynamics and powerful 3.2L twin-turbo flat-six, the Porsche struggled against Mercedes’ superior pace in the championship.
