The BMW M1, designed originally as a road-going supercar before being adapted for racing, featured a powerful 3.5L inline-six engine and distinctive wedge-shaped design. The 1980 edition of Le Mans was particularly notable for Porsche’s dominance, with the 936 securing overall victory. For the M1, competing in the IMSA GTX class, the race was a true test of reliability against prototypes and more developed endurance machines.
