Röhrl was renowned for his precision, calmness under pressure, and ability to master treacherous conditions, and this victory was a defining moment in his 1982 World Rally Championship title campaign. What made the Ascona 400 stand out was its rear-wheel-drive layout at a time when rivals—most notably the revolutionary Audi Quattro—were introducing all-wheel drive. Despite this apparent disadvantage, the Ascona’s lightweight chassis, near-perfect balance, and strong 2.4L DOHC engine developed with Cosworth allowed Röhrl to exploit its agility on the icy, mixed-surface roads of Monte Carlo.
