Ferdinand Porsche built this 4 passenger Austro-Daimler "Maja" in1908. The original Daimler Maja, was overseen by Emil Jellinick with design help by Porsche. 'Maja' was his second daughter's name (his older daughter was 'Mercedes. Debuting in 1907. the car was a failure due to drive train failures and production ceased after 150 units built. Jellinick was fired and went back to Daimler in Germany. Porsche took over Austro-Daimler and in a collaboration with the emperor's cousin, the Archduke Leopold Salvator who was seeking to motorize the armed forces. Porsche re-engineered the Maja as the Austro-Daimler AD 28/32 "Maja". This model is the first built for the Archduke bodied by Carl Cerny of Vienna. All manners of bodies were used from formal sedans, open cars, military and even as a rally car. The 4.5 liter 4 cylinder produced 35.5 HP.
It is great to see these early histories, Rich. Lots of interesting facts and images.
Rich, who made this gorgeous model?
I remember you posted this one years ago - I loved it then and still do! I'd be tempted to "overhaul" that engine with CMC-Exoto-like scale brass & copper fittings & plumbing! 😏 😎
@paul-rouffa It was some man in the Porsche family that commissioned the Maja and the Prinz Heinrich. Sorry, I have no idea where the paperwork is for these anymore and my memory ain't what it used to be.
This 1/18 scale model is likely from the Fahrtraum EP Collection, 1908 Austro Daimler 22/35 Maja in blue. It is very rare and in the $500 range. 1/43 versions are available.
