A Couple of LeMans Winning Ferraris
Here are a couple of Ferraris that won the 24 Hours of LeMans in 1965 and 1949 respectively. They've been made by adding livery to two of the HotWheels Elite cars, the 250LM and 166MM. There is still some detailing work that remains to be done, but the cars are essentially finished. I'm honestly surprised that Mattel hasn't taken the next step to build these cars.
Great job Bill.
Bill, perhaps they will one day. But just think your have stolen a march on ....
Mattel by beating 'em to it!
Not many manufacturers can say that they done one over on Mattel. So well done.

Great way to celebrate the 250 LM’s 50th birthday this year, Bill – inspired work
Was / is Rindt, at 23 + 2 months, the youngest driver to win Le Mans, or was Wurz younger? Either way, the holder was either Austrian (Wurz) or had an Austrian racing licence - both of them, Rindt was German born, but after his parents were both killed in an Allied air raid, he was brought up by his grand parents in Austria.
Nice job Bill.............
and it is indeed odd that Mattel has not done these cars.
We both know that the actual car was a bit modified from the base car - including a longer nose - but it seems pretty clear at this point that the Hot Wheels Elite car is as good a model as we are ever going to get so its time to stop waiting for one and take action.
I'd been considering doing an 'up from bare metal' for this car but I think I'll start out following your lead.
Thanks to 'Legacy Points' I've got a Hot Wheels Elite Ferrari 250 LM coming for free - love those Legacy Points! Now I just need to make some decals and hope to match your quality.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Both models look great, Bill....
I never pulled the trigger on that 166M. It's just too darned ugly looking despite its pedigree.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder............
and I have to agree, when I look at that 166 - even done up in Bill's excellent livery - all I see is one ugly little car that would look more at home in one of those 'Farmer and the Mice' cartoons than Le Mans.
As always, great job, Bill! I still find it hard to believe that '65 was the last year Ferrari...
... would win LeMans.
Great job Bill. I am intimately familiar with both cars, and am very tempted to spring for one of the Mattel Elite 250 LM's, but the only thing holding be back is that the Mattel is not the long nose LM winning body. But, boy your mods do make it look so tempting.....
true but it won!

For those that are curious, here's what Marshall is talking about.
The nose is 8-12 inches longer between the front of the front wheel opening and the headlight bucket, but heII will freeze over before somebody makes a diecast of that car.
Ken Hargraves and I saw one at Cars and Coffee in Irvine, CA
And I was rather taken by it. Compared to other cars of the late '40's IMHO, it's a lot better looking than most. Almost Cobra-esk. Now the Ferrari 125 is another story altogether.
And it's hard to beat the provenance.
Any chance of seeing this car with the bonnet open?
The Corgi version of this car in 1/43 just about changed my life when I first saw it at a young age. Is the Mattel the best version in 1/18?
May be Bill but I expect it was in 1:43rd scale either in white metal or resin

I wasn't specific enough, Chris. I meant in 1:18 scale diecast
I'm sure they're already out there in 1:43 and who-knows-what-scale in resin.
