I assume AA came up with that wire-through-the-base-and-rubber-band packaging . . .

. . . arrangement in response to customer complaints, for which they should be commended. But holy crap is it ever a pain in the a$$!

George, it must be labour intensive as well.

It's better than the minute screws they used to employ for keeping, particularly boots / trunks closed in transit.

It is hard to believe..............

that the wire and rubber band system is cheaper than just putting the car in a clam shell case so the answer must be that they feel cars sell better if they are in 'window' boxes.

I've noticed that many collectors actually display their models inside the original...

... window box. I'm guessing they reason it's cheaper than buying cases yet still protect the model from dust and other elements. Obviously, they wouldn't be able to do that with clamshell boxes.

That is true...........

but I don't think that they package their cars that way for our convenience in displaying them.

You have to also consider that not all of their cars come that way. The new Jaguars come in clam shell but the even more fragile Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale models do not.
