[Closed] Planning one's collection and how that went.

Meh .. There's "some" self control ... but not much ... ha ! ..
For me ....

First it was the Corvettes

Then the Chevies .. only the ones I liked - not all

Then the customs ... I had to have a few customs

Then ... My next target was getting one of the LE 500 offerings ... BUT .. only the ones I liked

Then .. Why not add a few trucks ... I like trucks

Well ..... How bad can it be if I only add 1 or 2 Harley Davidson motorcycles ... not bad right ????

CMC Revell Creative Masters offerings .... I was "THAT GUY" that paid $2500 for one yellow offering just so a guy could remodel his bathroom or something

My goal was to own EVERY American make & MODEL of car between 1950 & 1961. Then I saw...

...that, and this, and that one, and that red one, that truck, that new one, that 1972, that 1985, that 2019, oh, that one over there, the one for sale, the new realese, that blue one...etc, etc, etc...........

1/43, 1/32, 1/24, 1/25, 1/18, 1/16, 1/12, 1/8 that's about it. And no particular model preference.

Just whatever caught my eye and I had to have.

We've all fallen victim, there is no cure..........

For me it all started when I was on vacation in the Carolinas; the beach gift shop had a Mint model car on display, I resisted purchase going there three times, but on the fourth visit I succumbed. Twenty six years later, there's still 'must haves' and holy grails' out there............

26 years? Yikes!

Started collecting diecast cars upon retirement, just a few 1:18 that I loved.

within a couple of years I set parameters for my collecting as well as a goal in collecting; I wanted to collect 1:18 American 2 door cars 1950 to 1971 any and all cars produced within that time period.
Everything was proceeding according to plan when the industry decided to stopped making new mold cars that were not produced before, so I had to give up my goal after 15 years of collecting. I then went to other scales, but the detail was definitely lacking in 1:64 for my taste and the older 1:43 were lacking in detail and 1:24 basically stopped producing the type of cars I wanted.
So, I gave up in my goal of collecting all the American '50 to '71 and since I no longer had the goal of collecting all cars I decided to sell/give away all the cars in my collection that I bought just to make my goal [96 sold, 97 given away, leaving the 140 cars I loved]including selling Ertl American Muscle since I had up graded to the Authentic Series of the same car.
In the next few years I bought cars I liked only including years after 1971 up to-date, back up to 153 - 1:18.
Well, a month ago I discovered the 1:43 Goldvarg Collection that had some of the cars I desired. I have bought 7 of them in the past month with 2 of them being pre-orders.
That's my story and I am sticking to it.

And I started collecting in 1980.

I began collecting in the early 90's when I saw an ad for the 1:24 FM '53 El Dorado. By 2000, I had 35 FM/DM "must haves". I didn't collect 1:18 because they were "toys" in my opinion next to the "Precision Diecasts". In 2005 I was in a model shop in Burbank CA and saw a Ertl P-100 '57 T-Bird in Starmist Blue. I bought it and began selling off the FM/DM models. When I retired in 2013, I decided I needed to get more practical about my collecting in light of reduced income, space and eyesight. I decided to collect only 1:18 diecasts of cars whose design grabbed me now as much as it did when I saw them in the showroom. I decided to avoid the "toys" (like Motor Max). I bought a nice mahogany and glass case and reserved one shelf for my 1:12 scale Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild entries of the '60's. Once I filled the other shelves with 1:18, my collecting would stop. I still have room for about 5 more diecasts. I am worried that we won't see many new models in the future. Visitors who see the case are immediately attracted to the GM Guild models. After that I get various reactions. My YM '58 Edsel hardtop gets some looks. Also the ACME '56 Chrysler St. Regis (many say they never saw that car but marvel at its' uniqueness). Still have that P-100 T-Bird.
