Every Porsche up to the 911, including the 912, 914 and 924 with were joint projects with VW and/or Audi. With the air cooled 911 sales beginning to lag, Porsche decided on an all new front engine RWD GT 2+2 sports car to replace the 911 as their flagship automobile. It would be a bit longer to include rear kid's seats replacing the dog seats. It would now be a water cooled V8 with all new suspension that eliminate all the quirky characteristics of its predecessor. The first generation ( '78-'82) debuted in 1977 powered by a brand new 4.5 liter V8 delivering 240 HP. The subsequent two generations (928 S and 928 S4) added front and rear spoilers with production ending in 1991. By that time the V8 was now a 5.0 delivering 320 HP. along the way there were competition variants and when production ceased there was a 928 GTS with different bodywork and crazy horsepower and a 6 figure price tag with only 77 made for the US market.
This AUTOart model is the first generation 928 with all operational panels including the pop up headlamps. The panel lines are incredibly tight and the light groups are amazingly detailed.
Interesting choice of colors here (which I do like ) AND those seats actually look like, well.... SEATS! I'd swear I could push down on that checkered "material." A very cool model Rich, one I haven't seen before.
@chris Those seat and door inserts are a tribute to the "Pop Art" fad back then.
Did not catch on as well as the 911 but a fine car regardless.
Although some Porsche enthusiasts may have detested the 928, I absolutely embraced it !
I am however a big fan of the 911 / 912 series and will always be !
I've never seen this color. The one that I had from Auto Art was the blue metallic actually the light blue metallic I'm sorry that I sold it.
Steve
I was one of those Porsche fanatics that never really loved the 928, until I got a ride in one. My dad's friend let him borrow his '84 S for a weekend & it was an incredible GT. My dad must have really loved it because 2 years later, he got one himself...a new '86 S. I was able to drive it quite a bit, even though I didn't have my license. It was an amazing car.
I have this same model, but in the Minerva Blue that Steve mentioned. Absolutely love it & AA did an amazing job.
It's not that bad, but it will never be as iconic as the 911s. I can never look at a 928 without thinking of the movie Scarface, when Tony purchases one for $44K because Frank's wife makes fun of his Yellow (and leopard skin ) '63 Cadillac.
