Smokey Yunick picked the right platform to prep Hudson Hornets for NASCAR. The step-down unibody design provided a low center of gravity and that torquey twin carb 6 provided enough oomph to make him a winner. Hudson was all in and provided him with enough performance parts to beat the competition. Already fielding two Hornets in 1952 with many wins, by 1953, this '53 #92 Hornet with Herb Thomas behind the wheel, won 27 of 34 events including 7 NASAR races with Hudson winning the Manufacturer's Championship and Herb Thomas the Driver's Award making him the first two time winner.
Rich, your pics are fabulous! 😏 😎 😎
HW61 did a terrific job with these - my only gripe is that they did NOT replicate the "double-rims" seen on most Hudon racers. The inner stamped part of one rim (Kesley-Hayes I believe ) was cut free and welded over a second rim for strength - perfect for fast action & heavy-duty racing! 😎 😎
I have many of these Hudsons and was lucky enough to sit behind the wheel (but not drive it ) of Herb Thomas's actual car. - Very COOL! 😎 😎
Nice post Rich! 😀
IMO, the best looking HW61 Hudson racer is this one:
