1969 saw the last iteration of the Lola T70 platform. Going from the spyder body to an enclosed cockpit, the T70 MklllB chassis SL76/129 built for Roger Pensky's Sunoco race team for the 24 Hrs of Daytona and then Le Mans. Powered by a 460 hp, 5.0 liter Chevy V8, it was wickedly fast ( 0-60 in 3 sec ), handled well, but suffered a bit from inadequate braking power. It won the Daytona handily. On its way to Le Mans, this #6 car was actually stolen in transport. It was later recovered sans engine by Mark Donohue, who was to be one of the drivers, and had to be rebuilt. The engine, however, had been cut out of the frame making the Lola unfit to be raced again.
This 23 year old coupe sibling from GMP is of similar build quality and parts count to the Gurney-Westlake Bardahl soyder and they did a beautiful job on the livery with the delicate pinstriping. The interior seems to be identical to the Gurney car.
Very cool looking cars guys! 😎 Just remember Roger Pensky is no James Garner and vice-versa. 😏 😏
It makes one wonder where the engine is now?
I'll always remember Lothar Motschenbacher in the #11 McLaren with Jim Hall's Chaparral exploding over his head.
I used to follow his career only because I thought the name 'Lothar' was so cool. It was the name of the African Prince strongman sidekick of Mandrake the Magician - one of my favorite comic strips as a kid.
