The Ferrari 330 P4 is one of the most iconic and important race cars in automotive history. For me, I just think they were the most beautiful cars Ferrari ever built. Only 3 dedicated 330s were built. One more was a modification of a P3. 2 of the 3 plus a 412P4 finished 1-2-3 in the '67 Le Mans. Retired after the '67 season, the 2nd place finisher, chassis 0858, was given a beautiful new body for the Can Am circuit taking advantage the headlamps weren't required thereby reducing the frontal area. It was now known as the 350P4. The V12 engine was bored out to 4.4 liters, but it wasn't enough to compete against the likes of big block McLarens and Lolas. This particular car, bought by a privateer did have great success in both the Australian and South African circuits. When finally retired, it stayed in one owner's collection for 40 years until presented for auction. The question for the new owner is do you keep it as the ultra rare 350P4, or do you restore it to its original 330P4 where it would probably be worth more money. I just love the sculptural curves of this Can Am body with those snake-like intakes over the engine intake trumpets. Although not the winner it was hoped to be, for me, it's the prettiest of all the P4s. The model by CMF replicates its livery at the Laguna Seca Can AM.
an absolutely beautiful model. I don't think I realized this was a rebodied P4, another striking looking Ferrari.
Hi Rich,
This is a truly beautiful car and it had in various forms a brilliant racing history. In 1967, it did not however win Le Mans ending second and third behind the Ford GT40 Mk IV No.1. It did certainly come 1, 2, 3 at the 24 Hours of Daytona and won the World Sportscar Championship in 1967.
I followed CanAm in 1967 but missed the three races that this Group 7 Ferrari participated in. Best was 5th at Laguna Seca. Despite an improved engine, it could not match the brute strength of the McLarens. Win or not, I wish that I had seen it in action. This model by CMF is magnificent.
As always, love your posts Rich.
@david-green Thanks for the correction, David. I have Le Mans on the brain. I think I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago.
