It might arguably be the most gadget ridden gimmick American car of all time. It was Space Age in look and design with accessories seemingly ahead of their time. In tasteful SUNGLITTER CREME, this replication gave us all the excess that made the real car so memorable. In Convertible form, it features the elongated Fender Skirts, a Continental Kit, and Chrome...lot's of it! There is no mistaking this "no-longer a Ford look-a-like Mercury" for any other automobile on the road. It was long, sleek, powerful, and extravagant. I remember wasting no time calling DANBURY MINT and placing my order! It's a conversation piece today, just as much as it was back in the day.
I was 10 when that car debuted. It gave, to me at least, all new meaning to the phrase, a look only a mother could love. Over the top conny kit, skirts, bells & whistles.
I was just looking at my DM 57 Mercs and noticed that the pace car has no hood ornament while the other four do. Can someone tell me if the PC is supposed to have one? The reason I ask is that there is no indication it ever had one.
the ONLY car suitable for cruising the Redneck Riviera !!!...as soon as I learned of their existence, the hunt for one began.....I chose the hardtop largely due to the "My Favorite Martian" antennae on the front sill......my particular issue also featured a wildly independent front suspension (albeit not in chrome)

I think the primary reason I've always been okay with the '57 Mercury, despite its over-the-top styling, was that it didn't look like a Ford or Lincoln. In that era of cars changing a lot each year, it was nice to have the Mercury look different. And it stayed that way through 1960, then in '61 looked like a Ford again.

Hi Bob. I don't have the Pace Car, but I did some checking on the web and found out the Pace Cars did not have a hood ornament. They did, however, have fender mounted ornaments. Here's a vintage pic I found:
@john-barry, thanks for the unique pics of your Mercury receiving some tire rearrangements. What exactly were you doing with the tires.
A good many of my cars came to me drastically discounted for damages and missing bits...I was grateful to get them and still stay within budget......it took me a long time to buy an affordable TPKE cruiser and the condition was "challenged".......eventually I got this particular one sorted out George
The styling was definitely over the top. But I liked it, even back then. I was 5 in 1957. Proud to have the hard top in my collection. I love those "intakes" at the top corners of the windshield!

I keep the elongated skirts on my model, primarily for the reason that along with everything that is to excess on this car, they seem to belong on.

I bought mine on eBay, and don't think the skirts were included. I'll have to check the box... if I can find it! I've got model boxes stacked to the ceiling in my garage.
