A few years back, I decided to try my hand with a resin body build and found this '58 and I had two or three '58 AMT kits to work with. My results were less than impressive, so I decided to "weather" it for one of my Shambles Salvage dioramas. It's long gone, but I came across an interesting photo on some classic car salvage site the other day (second photo).

I suddenly realize that I don't ever recall seeing a'58 Chev Sedan Delivery.  Lots of earlier and later years but not a '58.

Fine workmanship on your distressed model John.....right down to your skilled livery signage...

...I hope, when it came time to part with this piece, you gave it the time honored tradition of dousing it with Ronson`s,lighting it, and setting it afloat on the crick behind the church

.....I suspect you did 😇

@john-barry LOL... naw, JB. When I moved to FL in '17, I sold off my entire collection of built and die casts. I have some regrets, but I got back into the hobby quickly.

Hi Jack. I saw a '59 once in a car corral that was in about as bad of shape as the 1:1 photo. I've always been partial to sedan deliveries, and did a '57 resto-mod back in the late 90s.  I bought sight unseen (big mistake) and a project of biblical proportions including floors, inner and outer rockers, engine/trans swap... and on and on. I spent 6 years and god knows how much money before trading it for a '72 Corvette. I had some good friends' help including a certified mechanic with complete shop, and one with a nice body shop. I lettered it up for my business, intending to use it for a tax write off, but chickened out.

@shambles John;  I recall seeing this one earlier this year.  I love this car and wouldn't have selected the grey paint job....but to my surprise it suits this car really well and looks great!

Hi Jack. It's hard to tell in the photo, but the color is a Harley-Davidson cream. My friend with the body shop who helped me so much had a Harley in that color, and I loved it. I was originally going to paint the SD yellow, and even painted the rebuilt small block 400 yellow before changing my mind.

@shambles I'm surprised to hear that the color is cream; it sure looks pale grey in the pics.  What did you do with the interior....stock or custom?

Hi Jack. Sedan Delivery was a bare-bones work "truck" with a plywood deck up to just behind the front seats (this one came with the OPTIONAL passenger seat!), so I was planning a mild custom interior. After replacing the floors and inner and outer rockers, I installed a set of cloth bucket seats out of a Camaro, repainted the dash and interior trim, restored gauges, and installed new windshield and door glass and weather stripping all around. It needed a new headliner, door panels, etc. and was fast becoming the proverbial "money pit". I put it on eBay, and traded it even for a '72 Corvette that needed some work, but nothing like that '57 project of biblical proportions. Here are a couple of before/after photos:

Wow....now that is a project!  It's great to see the car saved and done so well.

Thanks for your interest, Jack. My best friend owned the marina there in our small town. I'd help him work on his docks in the morning, and he'd help on my boat and car projects on Saturday afternoons. I'd provide a cooler-full of ice cold beer, he'd provide his expertise, well-equipped shop, and a helping hand. I found an old farm truck with the 400 small block. We rebuilt it, bored .30 over, and put a mild cam in it. Another good friend owned a body shop and traded out labor and storage for advertising. None of us kept score.... we all enjoyed it. Here's a couple more shots from early in the project. The passenger 1/4 panel was damaged, but fortunately, the trim spear was not. That piece was unique to the sedan delivery and unavailable on the aftermarket. The only thing I couldn't find was the latch/handle for the tailgate. There were two versions of the 57 SD; this one has the the single tail gate but a two-piece tail gate was also available.

@shambles Working on a project car on the weekend with your buddies in a shop with a cooler of brewskis.  About as good as it gets!

I didn't realize that the sedan delivery had the option of a 2 piece tail gate.

Are you aware of where this car is now?  Hopefully it is being well cared for.

Yeah, I miss those days and those guys. I traded the SD with a guy up north who had a buyer looking for one. We kept in touch for a while, but I have no idea where the SD ended up. We traded even for a 1972 Corvette

My friend at the marina helped a lot on this Corvette too. The engine had been modified with a cam, headers, and double hump heads. It wasn't running well, but he tweaked it back to life. We got everything working, put in new carpet, new gas tank, wheel bearings, etc. Fast car, but no a/c so it wasn't fun on hot summer days in Alabama! This car turned me into the Vette enthusiast I am today.
