This Rambler Rebel Cross Country Custom is a look it took me half a century to like. As a kid, I dismissed those Ramblers as kinda ugly but there was more to this than met the eye. The Rebel script meant it was powered by a 327 V8 w/ 4bbl and dual exhausts. When this engine debuted in 1957, a standard Rambler was actually faster than the 283 Corvette! Who knew? I didn't start paying attention to AMC until the muscle car era with their Rebels, Marlins and AMXs. Yes, this top of the line wagon is still a bit homely, but maybe dad knew what he was ordering in 1959 while telling his wife it's just a practical grocery getter.
This model is a kit build derived from a Jo-Hann promo with full interior including decals for seat upholstery options. It also contained parts for a taxi, police or fire truck options as well as the base wagon and trim options. I wish I had bought more kits right away. It was released by a small Texas based company who I assume bought or leased the tooling and added the rest. I got all the way done jazzing up the interior only to find the tinted glazing obscured it anyway. LOL
OMG! I had a similar Jo-Hann promotional in 1:25 scale in a lighter shade of Green. It was, along with my other promotional models (61 of them) that I lost in our 1971 house fire. All the models were on a self hanging on my bedroom wall and they literally melted from the heat and fire.
Like you Rich, I originally thought the car to be "kinda ugly", but none the less it was a favorite in my collection at the time. I remember having it parked next to my1961 Oldsmobile F-85 station wagon that was Orange with a White top. I kept them next to each other along with my 3rd station wagon, a 1960 Chevrolet (Turquoise). THANKS for sharing your post!

@georgeschire The green is from a Honda color 'rattle can' that was the closest match I could find to the original. I was amazed that the metallizer in the paint was so fine that it really scaled out to the model.

I love your finished product. It's a bummer about the tinted windows, but the car is still a gem.

I always sort of liked the look of this wagon back in the day (pic #1) but when my parents' friends traded in their '59 *Pontiac and bought a new '62 Rambler Cross Country wagon with the restyled tail end (pics #2/3) in a cool color called Jasmine Rose (pic #6) ; I liked it very much. Like many others, I had no idea how much punch these wagons packed under the hood. I once owned a near mint low mileage '63 Rambler Classic wagon (pics #4/5), white over gold but it was a 6 cyl. and kind of gutless; nevertheless I wish I had kept it. The '62 remains my favorite Rambler to this day.
*My parents' friend was a wild and crazy, hard drinking Irishman who had recently rear-ended someone while driving his '59 Pontiac wagon. He told us the reason it happened was that Elvis came on the car radio singing Hound Dog and he was so crazy for it that he got distracted while singing along. LOL. After it was repaired he traded it in.
My view of AMC back in the day was probably based on my buddy getting a graduation present of a'63 Rambler airconditioned convertible powered by a little 90 HP flathead 6. The car could not go up a slight incline without turning the AC off. In the rain going uphill, the vacuum operated wipers would cease to function. But he did look cool with the top down though.
It is a great-looking Rambler Cross-Country station wagon and built into this exceptionally cool replica. A pretty unique model to have in any collection !
I remember many Rambler wagons growing up in Western New York. I liked them because they looked different than the Big 3 offerings. In ‘79 my Dad had two wagons in his driveway. Unfortunately I’ll have to check with siblings as I don’t remember the models or years but Rick and I took “La Bomba” down to Ensenada for a surf weekend. The other wagon was my sister’s.

thats a great build Rich, and a great Johan kit that I cannot recall ever seeing. Would love to find one.
@geoff-jowett I have no idea how many kits were made. I followed their website hoping they'd do other models but it just went dark.
Rich, I remember you posting pictures of this model some time ago and commented at that time the wonderful job you did on building this. Seeing it again just confirms my thoughts. Love the color and writeup.
Rich, that is stunning. I actually always liked these for their unique styling. You definitely done it justice.💯👍
One of my Aunt and Uncle had a Red wagon. I remember riding in it going to my cousin's softball games.
