An uprising against the monarchy of Kaiser Wilhelm ll in 1918 due to the failing efforts of the German war effort led to his abdication in 1918. At the time he was at the Imperial Headquarters in Spa, Belgium and was offered sanctuary in the Netherlands. He was able to keep a decent amount of his vast fortune and lived a relatively quiet life until his death in 1941. His formal limousine for ceremonies of his state in exile was the Mercedes-Benz 770 Grand Mercedes Cabriolet F with the Mercedes star on the radiator replaced with the crest of the Hohenzollern family and had it painted in Kriegsmarine gray which betrayed his affinity towards the German fleet. At his funeral, the only high ranking German to attend was Admiral Canaris.
This stately limousine was one of 117 produced from 1930 to the beginning of WWll.
@bob-jackman Paul's Model Art well over 20 years ago about the same time as CMC's "Black Prince". I saw them both at a model car show for the first time and immediately blew the budget. Those were the first foreign made 1/24 models I'd ever seen.
Thanks Rich. I have the Black Prince but don't recall ever seeing the Mercedes.
great pics as usual Rich, very informative intro too, I never knew the story behind it, thanks.
