Interesting, Back in the day it was illegal, at least in most states, to have your wheels painted in other than the body color. The cops used to ticket you for that infraction. By the '60's, the steel wheels were no longer worth stealing.

@david-vandermeer Post WWll, tires and wheels were hard to come buy. Scrap yards were stripped for steel for war production and rubber was a controlled substance. Shortages lasted through the fifties (until the junkyards got replenished).
