A "What if?" that we all hope won't happen...but let's face it, it could.

This is not a pleasant thought, but one that all of us sadly have to admit can/will happen. Let's hope though, not for a long, long time.

The above said, here is the question.

What will happen to your diecast car collection when you die? Have you made provisions with those you love to continue collecting, or maybe instructed them on how to dispose of it properly...i.e. sell off for best return.

I realize that once we're gone, we have no control over what happens to our collections, and since we can't take them with us, it shouldn't matter. But I know that becasue we love our little toys, we'd like to think that they will be treasured or remembered after we are gone.

Thoughts please. And thanks in advance!

I recently tried to be proactive, and make a little money as I have not worked in almost a year now, and no unemployement compensation. I sold about 120 model cars on ebay. I quickly got tired of people buying items for $10.00 to $15.00 and then complaining about it (a lot of my boxes were lost in high water problems years ago). I am leaving all my models to my son, who can do with as he pleases. If he is able to sell them great, if he wants to keep some great. I really feel it will be a burdon on him and I'm sorry for that.

I have a very detailed list that includes....

... descriptions and values. I also have all of my boxes and my wife understands the collection is to be liquidated through eBay. She already understands how to use eBay (we've owned 4 or 5 eBay businesses) and needs to sell each car individually to maximize the return.

I'll give mine to Chris...minus the Fords...he has plenty of them!!LOL..

I tell my wife the same as Marlowe.

Personally,I don't think anyone deserves them. It'll pay for my cremation, maybe!!

The reason no one should get them is simple....no one will be able to touch the level of pleasure I get from them...melt them...bury them....if someone happens to find them, then,...for sure...they., again will be seen as treasures, no matter what shape they're in....how 'bout that!!

My wife has told me that should I die, she will buy the '57 Olds when it comes out. You have to love a woman like that. Smile

The collection of cars, planes, tanks, boats, 1/18 &1/24 mini studios and props along /pic

with the Plastic Players Performers are in a family trust along with the 1:1 robot collection.

It is also recommended that you have a proper will to back up the trust with each entity clearly documented and to who or what organization should receive them and who should not. Also try and find the most capable/trusted executor you can to carry on your (and families too) wishes.

Don't skimp on a cheap lawyer and find one that is well trained and experienced in putting together family or corporate trusts.

This practice is not just to protect a car collection but to protect your whole estate; if you don't want to see all of your (wives too) hard work go to a city, county or state auction.

And George, just picture some derelict cretin fondling your most prized 1/24 Oldsmobile or Buick with greasy hands. How would you like to be looking down from heaven helplessly watching your models be man-handled and ripped apart; violated and then thrown out with the trash like a cheap tart out of a Dicken's novel. I think the horror would be to hard to for you to bare. The eternal nightmare.

............I'm sorry George, I couldn't resist that Smile

This robot will most likely end up at the Smithsonian Museum as the first robot to give a major commencement speech

I'm going to have them cremated and buried with me.

Actually, I've asked my son to sell them for me. That will be my grandkids inheritance.

Who are those handsome guys??? They both look kinda familiar! LOL!

Seriously, Paul is absolutely correct about having an estate plan. It's what I do for a living and I cannot overly emphasize supporting his post. Each state is different, and estate and probate laws are different, but in California, a living trust (which always includes a will) is essential. Make sure you use an attorney that specializes in estate planning. Your average run-of-the-mill attorney knows nothing about the complexities and could very easily do your estate a lot of harm. I know.... I see it every day.

Mine goes to my 2 sons. What they do with them is up to them.
