It was somewhere around 18 years ago that DM sent out flyers promising a 1/24 1966 Barris Batmobile and I was stoked. I could finally give up on my resin garage kit for a model I'd been waiting for for years. This was to be the crown in DM's projected Batmobile series. What sunk the project was the number of expensive licensing. You had DC Comics, Warner Brothers, Greenway Productions and finally George Barris (I may have left another entity out). So DM struck a single licensing deal with DC Comics for one of their mid-sixties comic book versions ( elements of the comics Batmobile varied from issue to issue ) and came out with this really neat model with lots of bells and whistles along with some interesting components. This, now 15 year old model is similar to the Barris car overall but the chassis and Porsche style turbo V8 drivetrain and chassis makes it more like a Hollywood stunt car capable of Dukes of Hazzard and Bandit- like airborne feats. The cockpit has all the gizmology you'd expect and the trunk reveals both a bat-arsenal and a change of clothes for the Batman and Boy Wonder. It was a few years later that powerhouse Mattel finally paid the freight and a real licensed Barris Batmobile was finally a reality.
New to me. What a neat design with lots of gadgets and an interesting story line. Thanks Rich.
Being an avid Batman comics reader/collector back in the 50's/60's/70's (I still have all my comics in plastic and stashed away) I fondly remember this comic book version of the Batmobile. Not as iconic as the Barris version, but certainly fun as a kid (back then) to see. Thanks for the great pics Rich!
