The 1931 Mercedes-Benz SSKL or Super Sport, Short Wheelbase (Kurz) Lightweight (Leicht ) was Germany's apex predator of their "White Elephant" era when their race cars were painted in German Racing White that preceded the "Silver Arrow" era. 276 lbs lighter than the stock SSK by turning the chassis into Swiss cheese, it's supercharged 7.1 liter 6 produced an incredible 300 HP. This model is the iconic #87 car that won the 1931 Mille Miglia driven by legend Rudolf Caracciola. This car dominated both European endurance and hill climbing events. My first purchase of this SSKL was a rather poor model by Danbury Mint as well as a 1/18 Bburago kit build. One thing vintage car models had way back then was poor plastic plated wire wheels with the spokes way over-scaled. Both the Mints as well as the Italian Bburago suffered from this and my solution was to blackwash the spokes to give the illusion of a scale look. Well, leave it to the Germans to provide their SSKL with proper wire wheels. Paul's Model Art produced a vastly superior model with a beautiful 3=D dash with bezeled gauges, leather upholstery and hood restraints in a flawless finish. 30 years ago, this was the state of the art.
With even better wheels to come:
I'd had the DM for ages, but then after seeing your pics Rich, had to also add this version. Couple of nice subtle differences apart from the wire wheel quality, head light configuration and colors, hood ornament and fender colors, and the '87'.
