You couldn't pick a more unappetizing name for a color on this 1937 Cord 812 Phaeton. It conjures up what one's fingertips would look like after chain smoking a pack of cigarettes. Anyway, despite the fact that this model is extremely low tech, Franklin Mint did replicate the coffin nosed design of Gordon Buehrig that included a lot of aircraft inspired elements. Cord was also a major owner of the Stinson Aircraft Company and the hand-cranked pop-up head lamps were actually Stinson Aircraft landing lights. A Lycoming V8 propelled the Cord through a Traction Avant style front wheel drive system utilizing a 4 speed transaxle. Amelia Earhart fell in love with the '37 812 phaeton and is pictured here with her ill-fated Lockheed Electra.
Earhart's husband sold the car soon after her presumed death. It was sold multiple times and then mysteriously was broken down in parts and scattered across the US. It took many decades for the parts to be gathered but the car was finally restored and is now in the official Cord registry.
Great story. Low tech, high style. It's a beauty regardless. 👍
