DM '58 Pontiac Hardtop update.

I called DM this morning to order the hardtop. The service Rep didn't know anything about it so I insisted she check with someone else.

She found the info and said the ordering number is 8571 and is due mid-sept.

It got very confusing for a while because she was mentioning a LE '58 Convertible that is coming out and you have to purchase the hardtop before you can order that one.

Trouble is they have no ordering info for the LE convertible yet so forget about ordering it right now.

I'd love to know what colors the convertible will be and also if it will be minus the continental like the coupe.

Others have said the delivery date for the HT is mid-July so I'm wondering if her mid-september was for the HT or the following LE convertible.

YES! I was hoping there would be another LE connected with the coupe. Let's hope it's another great color combo!

I got the "delayed until Sept" message too

I ordered the Hardtop and DM says that it is not expected to ship unit Sept 23rd. This Ltd Edition might just be a fast sell out! I never even knew about it until I read the forum this past Tuesday (6/24). Thank You!

I never liked having to buy Item B before you can buy Item A.

Hope this isn't true about having to buy the '58 hardtop before you can order the convertible. Spending can be tight enough nowadays without having to buy a car you don't want just to get the one you DO want.

Bob it shouldn't bother you! Order car "A" and "B" and then return "A"

Nothing stipulates that you HAVE to keep both. OR Option 2) Buy both and keep them till they are sold out. At that point and judging from DMs past sales of discontinued models, the LE Coupe will probably be worth $250-$400 once its sold out. At that point sell it. This will net your keeper LE Convertible as FREE and you may even make afew bucks for your next purchase (or put gas in your 1:1's fuel tank!) LOL Smile

But Bob

Surely, you understand the marketing strategy behind this very astute business move on the part of DM. And, as has been said, you can always return the one you don't really want(but, of course, most won't and DM knows that!)

David is correct...

It is all about marketing, and I have no problem with it. I've purchased some really outstanding cars from DM, that I wouldn't otherwise been able to purchase, had I not ordered the first issue.

You guys remember the 56 DeSoto Adventureer hardtop in the two-tone lavender color combo? Well, it afforded me the opportunity to also purchase the companion convertible. And guess what guys...both those cars are no longer available from DM.

Thing is, DM produces such quality replica's, it is seldom that I've not wanted to immediately order a car from them as soon as it is offered. And besides, it's exciting to have some of the same make and year of cars, but in different colors!

As for the '58 Pontiac Bonneville HT, I already am bubbling over with anticpation to receive it....and now, I'm even more excited to know that another convertible will also be on the horrizon.

This is all about collecting...the more the merrier!

Just sell Item A for a profit and keep Item B

Why on earth wouldn't you want to keep the beautiful '58 Pontiac Hardtop? Oh well, to each his own. Just buy the hardtop, wait until the convertible comes out and be one of the priviledged few who's "allowed" to purchase it, then sell the hardtop on the secondary market once it's sold out. You're sure to make nearly enough profit to end up getting the convertible that you wanted all along for less out of pocket money! It's using the '58 Bonnie as a starting point, so the quality is sure to be top notch. I can relate to how tight money has become lately though. I've had to let a few beauties slip past me, only to have them discontinued and then watch their value in the secondary market skyrocket far out of my reach. A certain '40 Ford in Folkestone Grey comes to mind.

Yah, there's several options to avoid buying both, but as has been said, you can usually sell it for a profit. And, actually you may not have to wait until they are sold out. Often times the first ones out will sell for more than DM because buyers don't check. Look at all of the other DM models sold with prerequisites. Every follow-up issue is worth much more than a regular LE. My question is how did someone stumble onto this '58 Pontiac availability? Are we just ahead of DM's marketing plan for these models? By the way, thanks for providing a photo of it. But, what's this about a '48 Ford Sportsman? Can someone provide more info on it? This hidden info has occurred before with DM. I believe the blue '48 Buick cv was on the shelves and available before they got it in the catalogue. And because of that a few models reached ebay and brought some nice profits. There just seems to be something haphazard about it.

Greg makes a good point!

Greg is right on with his "buy item A, to get item B, and then, sell item A" theory. If you truely don't want item A, then that seems like a plan.

My only problem is, I don't buy any die-cast with the thought process being, I'll sell it, to make a profit.

I guess I'm a collector of die-cast cars....not money. And, if I truely don't want a particular die-cast car, I'm simply not going to buy it.

I often wonder about all the folks on the auction that, are selling cars like crazy. Are they lovers of old cars? I can't believe they are, if they are always parting with their collection. And, with no disrespect intended...if they have to sell some of their collection to make money, then perhaps they shouldh't have purchased the car in the first place. If I have bills to pay, I will pay them first, then buy "my toys"...but, I won't buy the toys first, then wonder how I'm going to pay the bills.

My car collection is with me until I die!

To each their own

Cars in DM catalog...

It is fact that, some DM cars never get to the catalog, and some have been out for a full year or more before they hit the catalogs. That has never made sense to me.

I've said many times over the last 15 years that, I could do a better job of marketing at DM, and provide more of what "die-cast collectors" want, than they presently do.

It's almost as if the guys in charge, are not of the collector mind-set at all. I've sent "want lists", and talked to folks at DM (and FM too), and I often get the feeling, I'm wasting my breath.

I'd be the first to admit that, the Chevy and Ford lovers are in the majority. So, I can undertand why the majority of the die-casts produced are those two marque's. But, come on guys...there are other makes that we all love and want in our collections too!

And, what is the DM and FM fettish with Cadillac's? Good grief, each mint has produced several over the years. I don't know about other collectors, but we've had enough Cadillac's.

The mints need to concentrate on what the buyers/collectors want....and, I think they need to improve on that aspect of their business/marketing plan.

Do they read our reviews of their cars on this board? If they don't they should. Why don't they contact their regular customers and get input? They don't, and they should.
