For 1969, the Mercury and Ford Divisions had the championship drivers on board, including Richard Petty's recent defection from Plymouth, but needed aerodynamic and powerplant upgrades to beat the high-winged MOPARs. Larry Shinoda redesigned the front ends to eliminate the inset air resistant grills inset the bumpers and lowered the cars for better high speeds. For homologation, Mercury released their Cyclone Spoiler ll in Cale Yarborough and Dan Gurney editions. They were all equipped with the 351 4V, automatic trans and bench seats. The early cars had to run the venerable FE 427, because the Boss 429 wasn't available in the numbers for the homologated cars. Later in the season, the 429 was homologated as a stand alone engine and the races were on! GMP did a great job on the Cyclones. As for the Talladega, this is a Wix replica of the Holman-Moody prepared Talladega as raced by Richard Petty.
Both the 1/24 GMP Mercury Spoiler and Wix Ford Talladega look superb in these excellent images. Really impressive as real and replica automobiles !
I also have these two and the Cale Yarborough nascar version. Still looking for the Dan Gurney nascar. Great history Rich.
