This apparently is a European version, as the U.S. bound models had bumper over-rides, a 12-volt electrical system, and new exposed sealed beam headlights.

Nice pictures Pete. I have the black model as it came in a two car display along with a white 1998 version.

I kind of like the headlights on the blue one.  Gives it character.

No Chav, it's a pic I grabbed off the internet. I never actually owned a Beetle, but I've driven quite a few.

Here's a little Volkswagen story from my youth.  In the summer of 1964, my dad brought a new '64 Volkswagen home on Friday, trading in his 1960 Chevrolet Biscayne.  I remember the Bug was black with red interior. He planned a drive to Santa Barbara with the family the next day, about 100 miles north of our house, taking the new VW on its first road trip rather than using the spacious '59 Chevrolet station wagon in the garage. Us three kids were small, two nine-year-olds and a six-year-old, so there was ample room in the back seat of the Bug.  I thought it was great!  We did our 200-mile round trip, and had a nice time, or so I thought.  On Monday when he came home from work, he was driving his old Chevrolet.  Where was our new Volkswagen?  I remember him telling my mother "I just didn't feel comfortable driving a car so small that my knuckles scrapped the front windshield when I held the steering wheel."

@bob-jackman Thanks Bob. I got the white New Beetle displayed with the red standard issue and blue millennium edition.

@pete-rovero

Great memories Pete! I've never even sat in a Beetle. The only German car I've ever owned was Trabant, same era, different side of the iron curtain.
