This 1953 Studebaker Commander Starlight came with the base 232.6 cid OHV solid lifter V8 that developed 120 HP. The Popular Mechanics road test gave it a 0-60 time of 17.9 seconds and a rating of 26.1 mpg. This V8 block was used all the way through the '63 to '64 year when it was bumped up to 304 cid with a 9.5 compression ratio and with the Paxton supercharger was rated at 335 HP with 400 HP easily attained. Between '53 and '55 the horsepower of the 232.6 was bumped up 227 HP mostly by upping the compression ratio. The overall design as well as the chassis was used all the way from the late '50s Hawk to the early '60s GT Hawk with many of the body panel interchangeable making the Studebaker a customizer's dream.

One of my favorite models and car design. I've always been completely intrigued by what Studebaker did with this design for so many years. To me, this design stayed fresh with their changes throughout the full run.

yep, just about my favorite 50s U.S. car design. Thanks Rich
When compared to other car designs of the time, this car stood out like no other in it's simplistic beauty.
