Here is a positive spin on the repaints by DM & FM
THis is meant to quiet the negative whinners. I am a long time collector but look at repaints this way. When the mints issue a car we are either pleased or don't like the color. Sometimes despite that we buy the car anyway. Later on here comes the dreaded repaint. Well there is a good chance ,like finally the repaint of the 57 Bel-Air in Dusk Pearl, that we get a color we wanted in the first place. If not you can wait for another repaint. Meanwhile the person that is getting the best deal is the new collector who now has an immediate color choice which we didn't have. So let's hear it for repaints. So sometime we old collectors win and sometimes not. No one is compelled to buy the one they don't like. If sales go well to those that want it it helps provide needed money to produce the new cars we want.
I feel that way about repaints, too, Glenn. I see them as being a generally positive thing that tends to offer choice and a chance to pick up on additional versions/colors or perhaps the ability to get a formerly out-of-production car.
Amen Guys! I agree.

As far as repaints go...if I liked the car in a previous color, why not add one in another color?
I recently added the FM '63 Chevy Impala Hardtop in red...it reminds me of one that a friend of mine bought new in that year....4-speed, 409..very cool.
The big issue I have. FM charges new tooling prices for old tooling.
Repaints of new or newer tooling is OK by me. Or repaints of old tooling at old prices (or less). If I am interested in a repaint, I would definately wait until the price eventually came down. Dealers are probably making a killing on these.
I feel we are all being cheated. But as everyone says. Buy it or don;t buy it.
FM, BRING MORE NEW TOOLING. AT LEAST ATTEMPT TO CATCH UP WITH DM.
Bottom line! How much do I really care about this. Not much. I sure don't lose any sleep over it. I just like to ruffle some feathers at times. One of my flaws I guess.
Confessions of a former whiner...
Admittedly, on occasion I have vocalized my disappointment in repaints. Like others though, I have come to accept them for the various reasons stated. Many of my favorite models are repaints, cars that when initially issued did nothing for me. Case in point: the FM's 1955 Pontiac. I didn't like the yellow/black version but love the two tone blue one. Same for the HT - although I own the green/white model, I jumped all over the two red/black ones.
As everything, people have their likes and dislikes and opinions. Like it or not, repaints are a fact of life and if you don't like them, complaining about them is like complaining about the weather - it won't do any good, so why bother?
I do however reserve my right to complain about the number of Corvettes... 😉
Repaints themselves are not the issue......
its just the enormous number of them that bothers me, especially from FM
I see the repaints as "Choices"...
But it would be nice if FM would come out with more new toolings
Agreed
If it weren't for repaints...
...we'd be arguing about the real thing. There would be ZERO scale models/scale model companies without repaints.
Just for example....DM
7 new models....6 repaints.
All of the repaints carry a "premium" price, as they should.
The difference is most of DM's repaints are newer tooling.
Not tooling from 1890
Does DM repaint any of the super old tooling. Maybe once in a while (DM 57 CHEVY). They are too busy coming up with new stuff. DM is the king. FM needs to improve for me to pay the bucks they are asking for old tool stuff.
I agree Glenn, the extra color choices can be nice, and a new collector may finally get an otherwise long discontinued model, but after all these many repaints, where are all of the new tooled models from FM that they're supposed to be funding? We've sporadically had one or two totally new tools every now and then from FM, and I think those may have been in the pipeline long before the new owner's took over FM, but not much else of late.
Raffi just recently helped produce a new model at FM by combining parts from, and utilizing previously used molds. It's not a totally new tool. The model is of a very unusual sports car, which few collector's have ever heard of. It's a nice model, but I think there are so many other more desireable models that could be done, but haven't been, that are much more main stream, or sought after by collector's. But hey, it is a new model, albeit something old, something new, and something borrowed, which is better than nothing new at all. IMHO
Danbury didn't even spend any $ until 2005!
Meanwhile TFM has more new toolings than DM has in the last 9 months. Count 'em up.
To use a sports acronym, its all about "What have you done for me lately"
Like to see the proof behind youR 9 month statement. Even if that is true, not a long enough time to guage IMHO.
FM more new toolings than DM. DM still in the lead. No time for reason.
Can't wait for the 49 Olds myself.
