Today's a "Two-Fer".  FRANKLIN MINT'S 1958 EDSEL CONVERTIBLE

FM 58 EDSEL (Pink)
FM 58 EDSEL (Turquoise) #1

No, these flyers didn't come together in the mail, but I pulled them out of the file I have them in together and since it is the same car, both are featured today.

The PINK Edsel came first from Franklin Mint and then the TURQUOISE version.  For the record, there were eventually two other repaints, one BLACK and the other RED.  The Red one is the only one I don't have.

I was excited to add all these 1958 Edsel's to my collection, mostly for the memories they invoked in me.  When the real versions debuted in the Fall of 1957, I saw them at Peterson Ford which is directly behind the street we lived on at the time.  Of course they Peterson was primarily a Ford dealer, but they were touting the "new and spectacular" Edsel, of which they only had one...a convertible, on their showroom floor.  Being just 6 years old, I loved all cars, but I remember thinking the Edsel sure was funny looking.

As history has revealed, the car had flaws and it was a bad time for it to be released.  And that "egg sucking a lemon" grille has forever been the subject of debate.  Anyway, today it's the oddity of the car and the story in automotive history that is its legacy.  It's no longer odd looking to me, I like it.  In fact, I like it better than the Ford's for that year.  Perhaps for no other reason than I'm six years old again when ever I look at it.

Thanks George. I ordered the pink one when it first came out. I bought the turquoise about two years ago on our auction site. I liked the Edsel from the very first time I saw it and still do today.
