DABURY MINT'S "LIMITED EDITION" 1958 CHEVROLET IMPALA CONVERTIBE
A Tribute to the 45th Anniversary of a True '50s Classic!
My eyes popped when I saw this brochure! I like the rich color BLACK with the inviting RED interior. I like that it doesn't have a continental kit. I like that it has the optional "Top Up or Top Down" feature. I like it because the '58 Chevy is one of my favorite body styles. I ordered this model for all of these reasons.
Immediately though, I felt that the car didn't look right in the brochure. It looks "short and stubby" . With the top up (to my eyes) the car looks even shorter. The rear wheel wells (again to my eyes) look too big, and then theirs the "wing windows" that appear to wide.
Of course, this is a repaint of DM's previous convertible releases, both of which had the continental kit's hanging in the rear. And maybe that's why they didn't look "short and stubby" like this release does...just a perception perhaps. And also, the "sliver rocker panel" on all of these DM Chevy's is much wider than it was on the real cars.
This model was NOT one of DM's finer moments. The flaws aside, my model is tight. The doors, hood, and trunk fit snuggly and they open and close as they should. The white-wall tires and wheel covers look right and highlight the car perfectly.

I too had to have this one when I first saw it in the brochure. I ordered it right away. As with you, George, I was disappointed with the overall look of the model. I am not sure why it looked off to my eyes. Could be the lack of continental kit, or the lack of skirts. Whatever it just didn't "WOW Me" as it had in the brochure, so I sold it in 2005.
OK, as ii has happened to me on several occasions. A few years later I decided I needed to have the model back. So I went looking for another. I have it in my collection once again, and this time around, I do appreciate the model much more. It is a great color.
