This Franklin Mint 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster was one of our club cars from back when they were a yearly treat. This roadster was the last variant of the famed 300SL that dominated racing until 1955 when, in response to a horrific crash at Le Mans, Mercedes-Benz terminated their racing program. Released in 1957, this roadster had conventional front hinged doors made possible by lowering the sill trusses that had necessitated the gull wing doors on the coupes. The rear was reworked as well as a reduced gas tank providing more trunk space with fitted luggage as this was to be solely a street car. The following year this removable hard top was offered to offer a more practical option. After 1957, only roadsters were built with this line ending in 1963.
This model is one of 413 built. I remember an alternate top (white?) being sent and was awarded via lottery. If anyone remembers that story, please chime in.
That's a really sharp little roadster Rich. Thanks for sharing it with us. Great pics of it as well. 💯👍
I think the 300SL convertible is a gorgeous automobile. Decades ago I was lucky enough to see a rolling chassis at a MBZ exhibit. If you think the car itself is a K.O. you should see what's under the sheet metal ! Steve
