OK, these things weren't made for the highway, but they were as futuristic in the 30s as the Chrysler Airflow. When I was a kid, there was a local station that basically ran movie serials and old cartoons non-stop ( the station (ch13) ultimately became our local PBS. I was fascinated with serials like Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe and the interplanetary wars between Flash Gordon (Larry "Buster" Crabbe) and Ming the Merciless (Charles Middleton) from the plant Mongo. Add to that, cheesy series like Captain Midnight, Captain Video (Ed Norton's favorite) and Tom Corbett, Space Cadet, I was obsessed with what the future would bring... circa 1953. So, besides our little cars, I've also built models of space ships and figures just for the memories. The two ships shown are ancient resin models back when primitive casting techniques meant weeks of prepping parts and eliminating a million pin hole bubbles in the surface. The Flash and Ming figures were assembled from unpainted yellow, soft cast vinyl that I filled in with plaster to keep the parts from deforming over time. I have closeups of the figures that I can't find but it'll give you an idea of the rest of my sci-fi movie collection of models, old toys and memorabilia. Hopefully, some of you old timers will get a kick out of these.
First is Flash Gordon's ship and then Ming's.
I remember those TV and Saturday movie serials so well! Good grief Rich, are we really THAT old? LOL!

Yeah, Big Guy, we ain't got much tread left on our tires.
Now, that takes me back to the old black and white TV days. Those space vehicles sure made strong sounds. Thanks Rich.
Great collection, Rich ! Yep, I remember watching "Flash Gordon" serials as a kid on Sunday mornings. They were sponsored by "Burt Weinman Ford" with their famous spokesman/used car pitchman, Linn Burton.
Flash was an all-American hero and his girlfriend, intrinsically sexy blonde Dale Arden (played by Jean Rodgers) was a true knockout, even to a little boy like me watching on a black and white TV in the Fifties.
LOL, here is a typical sensational sequence by Flash, abandoning a doomed rocketship in the planet Mongo's atmosphere. As the YT description said, "Flash Gordon parachutes from a rocketship and lands inside another one. An incredible feat."
Awesome collection Rich! Thanks for sharing this blast from the past.

True enough Rich....and the wide whitewalls are getting wider by the day.
