About the time Bruce Brown's "Endless Summer" (1966) got us guys California dreamin' and the surfing craze at the Jersey Shore was in full bloom, my buddy shows up with an incredible Dodge Power Wagon Woody. It was the perfect vehicle to throw the boards in and we fancied ourselves as Butch van Artsdalen shooting the Banzai Pipeline. To be frank, I was a terrible surfer, but when we rode into the burnt out USO pier in Long Branch, we looked the part. Now by this time, the woody wasn't in great shape. All the mechanicals were actually OK. The exterior wood was what you'd expect after at least 15 years of neglect. The floor boards were rotting out so which of the three of us had to sit in the back basically had to deal with carbon monoxide poisoning. I was going to do a pictorial on this Danbury Mint 1946 Dodge Power Wagon... a model the same age as me. I thought back to Joe's woody and wondered who made it. Here's the mystery: there was only one Power Wagon woody known to exist. It was commissioned by the factory staff as a present for their boss... and it still exists.
So, this is one more mystery in my life because I was too stupid to ask questions and search the thing maker's marks or whatever. In those days what was in my head was "Yeah, that's cool... let's get some pizza." LOL Anyway here's the model painted like it was war surplus.
Great story Rich. Love those Power Wagons. They were some badass trucks.💯👍
That is a fabulous model of a one off 1/1. Thanks for sharing.
