This 31 year old Franklin Mint model of the no-frills 1967 Volkswagen Beetle was a perfect image choice for the day. It was as simple as FM's parts count was in that era. They couldn't go wrong. Flash forward to this 2000 Millennium Beetle ( 2.0 ) and FM had tripled its parts count. Up to date features like realistic hinges and roll-down windows abound. The interior smacks of George Bojaciuk's touch that includes a flower for your lapel,a cell phone and a pair of gloves in the glove box. I can't say I care for the special Millennium Blue finish. The large grain metallizer in the paint lights up like a snow storm in a search light beam.
Interesting evolution. That early FM VW is still a favourite. Nostalgia, I guess.
Have both, love both. Thanks for the photos and history.
The New Beetle was one of the most feature rich models FM has ever done. And you're right Rich, George B's hand is all over this one. Sliding and folding front seats, folding rear seat, removable package tray, trunk mat, and engine dip stick, among other things you mentioned. I always felt this model was underappreciated on the secondary market.
@pete-rovero Pete I got this white model along with the black 1967 in the package along with the circular display. I agree with you and Rich that this is one of the most detailed models from FM ever.
Rich, your comments regarding the blue paint on the millennial version ruins an otherwise great model.
Have both, love both. Thanks for the photos and history.
