With a little pushing from Ralph Nader! The government should have stayed out of the car business.

You're right, it's a 72. My bad.
Yeah, they should never have forced the auto industry to make safer cars, that don't pollute, and...
... get better gas mileage! The shame of it all!
:D;):))
I find it interesting that only non-minorities think PC is out of hand.
😉
Marlowe thanks for pointing this out to me BUT i knew all about it already
I know WHY the bumpers were changed in the early 70s dosnt mean I have to like the look of them, nor feel like the earlier sculpted bumpers aren't more pleasing to look at! YES the boxy bumpers that stick out did a GREAT job of absorbing impacts and minor accidents. I know I had a 1973 Delta 88 and the bumpers on that car were phenominal! On New YEars day of 1985 I was coming home from work and it was raining out. There must have been an oil slick because I tried to stop from 25 MPH and even in a distance of over 300 feet I couldnt do it! The car kept sliding. Long story short ahead of me at a light was a NEW 1985 Seville and I bumped her probably at that point I was doing about 10 MPH. If you recall they had a lower rear end and bumper. The tailight broke, the trunklid dented up, the quarter panel kinked in, almost $3000 GRAND then and my Delta 88 and absolutely ZERO damage! I mean NOTHING!
As for the bumper guards ..... I think your missing the point WHY people had them. The main reasons was incase one had to A) Push another car they had something that had pads and stuck out that could contact another car without damaging either cars' bumpers and B) bumper guards helped protect the chrome bumpers from annoying and minor "dings" / scrapes from other cars when parked. Much like today some people use those "Bumper Buddies" which is essentially a rubber mat thats wedged inbtween the trunk lid and bumper cover and drapes OVER the rear bumper and covers it to help avoid getting annoying chips and gouges in the painted plastic bumper covers of todays cars! NO different then bumper guards. I would say the absolute BEST combination were the bumpers like my Delta. They were shock mounted AND have a wide rubber contact strip in the middle of the chrome bar running the entire width of the bumper and even wrapped around it! So you protected the chrome and other cars bumpers if you tapped them lightly and no damage to your car happened! Did they look very stylish? not really but they worked!
Actually Marlowe I am WHITE Italian-American and I AM the minority !
Look up statics of NYC White people are the minority, especially in Queens! Look up the Demographics of NYC and Queens and you will clearly see! So while I am white-American I am a minority!
LOL! Sorry Phil, but you don't fall under the legal definition of a minority.
Hehe! You said it and made my point. A guard to guard the guard. I think the irony is funny.
You know better than to pay much attention to my when I'm in one of my argumentative moods! Today is one of dem days! :D;):))
When you say the '70 Riv was a dog of a car, do you mean appearance-wise, or "dog" as in poorly built and unreliable?
Always remember that any report or statistic can be tainted to obtain the results desired.

8% of the population isnt considered a minority? OK if you say so!
