On past 9/11s I have posted this Action Corvette that was a class winner at the 2001 Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. Note the decorations honoring the fallen, including emblems of the NYPD, NYFD, and Port Authority Police.
Earlier this year I obtained two F1 replicas from the 2001 race at Indy. I attended this race, which I think was the first US car race following the 9/11 attacks. Certainly we looked cautiously at any airplane flying overhead. Anyway, several F1 teams put an American flag on their cars to honor those still stunned by the loss. Future champion Fernando Alonso drove this Minardi PS01, but was a DNF. This was an edition of 2111 examples.
Another future champion, Jensen Button, drove this Bennetton-Renault B201 to 9th place, an LE of 2811.
Both cars came with a special outer sleeve:
According to the sleeve, there are four other "9/11" cars that I need to seek out. These include other team cars (Alex Young's Minardi and Giancarlo Fisichella's Bennetton), an Audi R8 (also from the Petit), and a Porsche 911 GT3RS from the Grand Am final at Daytona. So my work is cut out for me.
They are all great-looking racing cars and with fine tributes to that terrible day and all those people.
Update - I found the Audi R8 on ebay for a reasonable price. The others are there too, but not so reasonable.
