Retail now is $US100 for the "Collection d'Elegance". Regular series 1/43 are $86. But you get a bigger box and a leather plinth!

Is this in reaction to Minichamps or Brooklin or just the market?

I don't know what the motivation is. I don't like it. The model is important, not the packaging

I see these fancy display pads as unnecessarily bulky and expensive, taking up too much space in my display cabinets, I should say, in my storage cupboards.

I call it the Vulgari effect.

I just don't understand. This box can't used for display, and it's harder to store. One of the beauties of the 1:43 scale is space consideration. So we are faced with a choice: toss the fancy box, or clutter a closet?

It's what's inside that matters....

..TSM still manages to offer beautiful, precise detail, great QC and a modest cost. That they also add a nice wrapper to it is not necessary, but does make a statement those other guys should notice.

But is the reverse true?

....A nice box absent a nice model strikes me as disingenuous. Rather than figure out ways to distract, some would do well spend that money to add to the substance of their images. In order to make money, you have to first spend it, and it's often more expensive in the long run to spend less on the box than the content.

I neglected to say that the Alfa is beautiful, Karl. I think we are so fortunate to be living during this time of abundance and even more fortunate to be able to acquire some of these replicas, fancy boxes or not;)
