(Pics) 1959 Plymouth Savoy

This is IXO's '59 Plymouth Savoy taxi from the James Bond Collection's "From Russia With Love" edition. Here, I have eliminated the taxi items like the checkerboard trim and large front fender meter to give a standard Savoy appearance.

In the meter's place I installed a guitar string antenna and blackwashed the grille. The tires are the regular whitewalls but could be reversed to give an even more basic '59 Savoy look.

Nice work, Mike.

Now it looks like a much more expensive model.

Mike, how did you eliminate the checkerboard trim?

Did you paint over or remove it with something like acetate.
I have the this model and would like to the same

Nice work, Mike. I wish IXO would do one like it.

Good work, Mike. I used acetone (nail polish remover) to get rid of decals but

I found it dulled the paint. I figured there is some method that works well. I haven't found it.

PIC - Hi, David. You probably know that Whitebox makes red and blue diecast versions and maybe you were looking for a higher detailed resin model such as Premium X would do?

I have the Whitebox civilian model which is pretty good at $30 however, it does have that two-tone DeSoto-style paint job which I don't think was ever offered on the '59 Plymouth:

Premium X and White Box makes them.

Coming soon from White Box is a 2dr hardtop.

Jay Golan for water slide decals all you need is scotch tape.

For printed lettering I use denatured alcohol from the hardware store.

Hi Jay. Removing the checkerboard trim was a bit trickier than I hoped. I first used non-acetone nail polish remover and a Q-tip, but after some work it was only partly off, as the NPR softened the checks a bit but didn't dissolve it like a regular tampo might.

Both denatured alcohol and generic paint thinner weren't really effective either. So I first colored over what was left of the checkerboard with a sharp-tip permanent black marker.

This was reasonably effective, but I finally also used a thinned coat of gloss black enamel model paint.

Thanks, Randall. As I mentioned to Jay above, I ended up using a multi-step process to convert this to a regular 4-door '59 Savoy.
