(Pics) The Professor's Buick - part 2

After Professor Page had vanished in July of 1936, his son, Thornton Page, Jr, who had been a Rhodes Scholar studying in England, returned to the U.S. to help arrange family affairs and take care of his mother, who remained nearly in a state of shock over the weird events.

Since the authorities could find no evidence of anything at all, the young Page asked for the return of the nearly new 1936 Buick, which was done later in August of 1936. When Page himself returned to England to resume his studies in September of 1936 aboard the liner "Queen Mary", the Buick went with him and the cargo fee was paid by a little-known American federal agency known as the "Civil International Association". This association now sponsored Page's educational and living expenses at Oxford, over and above that that provided by his scholarship.

Later, after Page received his Doctorate and returned to the U.S. (with his '36 Buick), he did important work and taught at various institutions, also becoming a key scientist directing the Apollo moon missions. His final work was never finished and was titled "Hexagon Features on the Moon, Mars and Other Solar System Objects". His notes and rough draft have unfortunately been "lost". In any case, he always stayed in touch with his friends at the C.I.Association. ..... and he always drove Buick automobiles.

As a postscript, the Page '36 Buick, still in amazingly pristine original condition, went up for auction at the Barrett-Jackson event in 2001 and fetched a record $ 1.95 million dollars, the highest price ever paid for a Buick automobile.

After the sale, a manila envelope filled with remarkable photographs was found lodged behind the rear seat. The images were of the Pyramids at Giza and in Central America ....... and seemingly similar structures on the Moon and Mars. Where the close-up lunar and Martian orbital images came from remains a mystery, as they appeared to be of vastly higher detail and quality than has been (publicly) returned from various probes. Regrettably, the envelope and it's contents were apparently accidentally destroyed or thrown away.
The Page 1936 Buick remains an award-winner at car shows.

Meanwhile, another young scientist that had known both the older Dr. Page and his son was Professor Henry Watkins from Bath, England. Dr. Watkins was an astronomer and a widower whose wife Ivy was killed in a V-2 rocket attack. Watkins had a young daughter Ella and, interestingly, he also always drove Buick automobiles, even while working and teaching in England.

Not too long after the war, in June, 1947 , Watkins and his daughter moved to the U.S., settling in Roswell, New Mexico. Watkins spent 3 days of the week working on a new giant radio telescope as a joint project for the U.S. Army and the British Jodrell Bank Trust. The rest of the time was spent back in Roswell writing papers and taking over from his housekeeper in looking after Ella.

The huge radio dish was to apparently start listening for "something" out there and also to analyze the mysterious long-delay radio "echoes" of earth broadcasts first noticed by Marconi in 1920 and which appeared to come back from a point somewhere in the orbit of the ringed planet Saturn.

In mid 1952, Professor Watkins drove his treasured 1950 Buick to a conference at Alamogordo, New Mexico, to speak on "Unusual refectivity features on Saturn's moon Iapetus". It was during this conference that the famous "Lowell" UFO photograph was snapped by one of the scientists attending and which showed the Watkins Buick and other automobiles in the parking lot and a pair of the mystifying "green fireballs" soaring over the scene. These green "fireballs" had been plaguing atomic installations in America since late 1948.

Later, a news photograph taken at the Pentagon parking lot was noticed by sharp-eyed viewers to curiously contain a number of the same cars seen in the Lowell snapshot. Watkins officially had no connection with the Department of Defense, but at the end of July, 1952 he appears to have left Washington D.C. on a trip back to his New Mexico home, traveling a long, circuitous northern route that visited "friends" at various U.S. Air Force bases along the way.

His first stop was at Wright-Patterson Air Force base where he met with an acquaintance who worked at the base's "Aero-Medical Facility" located in a lower level of Hanger 18. Watkins never talked about what was discussed or seen that day, saying only he "reminisced" about "old times" with his friend.

While traveling near Devils Tower, Wyoming, Watkins wrote in his diary that he had seen a "very curious green cloud" that produced "quite unusual electrical effects", and which then appeared to follow the Buick for many miles past the Keyhole Reservoir area.

Next, Watkins pulled his Buick over one night in Nevada near Groom Dry Lake to watch a magnificent full moon rise over the horizon. As he got back in the car, he also noticed some "remarkable and quite extraordinary lights" that suddenly appeared over the distant mountains. Watkins mused that maybe they were "ball lightning" or "swamp gas".

The following day, Watkins picked up 9 year old daughter Ella from his sisters house in La Jolla, where she had been staying for the last three weeks. That afternoon, they started the 2 day drive back home to Roswell, New Mexico.

That evening, somewhere near the California-Arizona border on a dark desert highway, both Professor Watkins and Ella saw a shimmering light. At first, it was in the distance but it quickly zoomed into the sky right next to them. Ella cried out, "Daddy ! It's a flying saucer !"

The Professor pushed the accelerator down and the powerful Buick Fireball Eight responded. quickly taking the car to 80 miles an hour. But it was no use, suddenly the Buick died, the straight 8 motor quit and all power and lights went out in the car.

As the Buick rolled to a stop, both Watkins and Ella seemed paralyzed and speechless, only able to move their heads around and look at what was unfolding. The saucer hovered right next to the car and sent down a large, glowing contraption to the ground. Out of this stepped a strange robot, who pointed a light at young Ella and floated her right out of the car as if weightless.

A series of beams appeared within the glowing contraption which then gathered Ella up into the disk. The robot followed and the saucer retracted it's "elevator" and disappeared into the heavens. All this was watched by a shocked and totally powerless Dr. Henry Watkins.

Suddenly, it was 3 hours later. The Buick was smoothly cruising down an Arizona highway and Ella was sitting quietly beside her father in the big convertible. Both of them could not remember a thing about the previous hours, but Ella suddenly became fascinated with everything about the Red Planet, Mars.
