I got to Harper Porsche around 7:00AM yesterday. The dealership has a sliding gate to the lot that they close at night - yesterday it was used to let in only those cars approved for the "color corral". Everyone else had to park in the grass across from the entrance. As I drove in I overheard our PCA chapter president remark that I wasn't parking with "us peons". Ha! Most of the cars in that field a few hours later were certainly not peon-ish. Ultimately I parked between a light yellow early 911 Targa and a blue 356 coupe.
I got a lot of nice comments and saw several of the members I knew, still learning a lot of names as it's a big chapter. We have a drive to an event at the Lane Museum later this month and I found out 12 have signed up so far. I took a lot of pics, the theme of the event was Porsche colors and I saw some real pretty ones. Attached are some - wraps seem popular, as well as owners creating "tribute" cars to look like real vintage racers.
I displayed some 1981 Le Mans memorabilia in honor of the race (including my Minichamps model of the winning 936). Le Mans also celebrates its 100th anniversary since the first in 1923 (but only 90 actual events due to a 1936 gas crunch and the war years plus aftermath). There was a bit of free swag available - I got a 75th tee shirt and a can cozy from the Blackrock Motorsports park being built a few miles from my home on the Cumberland Plateau. When the race started at 10:00, I actually found a seat inside at the desk of the salesman who sold me my car in 2017. Watched the race for a while then headed home.
Here's some wraps and tribute cars. The Martini 911 wrap even included race grime and scrapes. The Cayenne wrap replicates the colors on the 917L Martini car from Le Mans 1970.
Porsche dealers have a contest to restore old cars and Harper is working on a '75 911they found.
Some more colorful cars, including mine. The bright blue 911S was a barn find and will soon be on BaT.
Watching Le Mans next to a GT2 RS - what could be better? I bet Karl remembers watching Sebring at the Hinsdale Ferrari dealer a few years ago during a model meet there.
