As I suggested in my earlier post of yesterday, I'm not a fan of fender skirts. They were around as an accessory but seldom seen in the day, at least in the west. I have modified my '61 Impala to remove them which is more to my taste. It does take a steady hand with the Dremel tool and small file.

Some cars look better without them and this is one of them. Nice work Curtis.

Steady hand indeed! I would have destroyed it for sure. Nicely done.

Better...? Heck yeah ! The 59 and the 65 are the two others. However, where's the antenna on the driver side rear fender ? I'm pretty sure I remember these year cars with two antenna. Not sure if both antenna were hooked up to the radio but the car looks almost naked. It kind of reminds me of one of those cars at the county fair with that big antenna that would scrape the metal roof to power it Smile

@100ford2003 Yeah, I would have preferred two antennas if they were going to be on the rear.

I also think the car looks better without the skirts. However, when I get mine, I will leave them on the model. I do not know, if I could do as nice a job as Curtis. Finally, I remember two antennas, one on each rear fender.

Great job removing those fender skirts, Curtis, especially on a resin model that is more fragile than a white metal model. I too used a Dreml tool to remove the skirts on my Brooklin ‘61 Impala. I also “lowered” the windows and painted the dash and rear shelf red as they would have been on the actual car. Removing this fender skirts on both Impalas improves them 100%.

@david-knight Yes removing them on these models is a vast improvement in my view.

It is a fine job and looks great. I am one of those who likes this one (and a number of automobiles) each way, both with and without fender skirts. The beautiful 1961 Chevrolet is a strong design and can easily handle it either configuration.

I've never owned a 1:1 1961 Chevrolet but I'm all but certain a right-side fender mounted antenna was standard when a radio was ordered, a rear mounted antenna was optional and duals (adding a second antenna to the LR quarter ) was a dealer-added option.

@100ford2003 Steve, when the car had two antennas, only the right side was hooked to the radio. The rear location for the antenna was an option, many times by the dealer, as was the choice of one or two.

And here I thought one antenna was for AM and the other for FM....HA....just kidding 😂

Thanks, I figured that one had to be a "dummy" and there just for looks. 👍
