In 1962 Ford's concept design team built this fastback Thunderbird. I always assumed from the name that it was a Ghia or Turing build. It was shown up until the 1964 New York Worlds Fair. Although then slated to be crushed, it was saved by cowboy actor Dale Robertson. The fiberglass roof and trunk deck were given to DST Industries who were also making the fiberglass panels for 100 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolts. Aside the beautiful leather interior, there some neat styling cues on the exterior included the cute spider web tail lamps and stylized Thunderbird badging. The fastback design on that generation T-Bird looks just perfect and I'm surprised it was never offered as an option in the production cars. The car has been restored over the years and still exists.

What a great-looking car and model ! That fastback style is really nice on this era Thunderbird. I am glad the car still exists and I also recall SunStar did a special 1/18 Buick with a Dale Robertson TV- theme.

When I first saw this Bird, I didn't believe it was a "factory job;" it looked too good!  😬 😬

Lol, Chris has a fine example of the SunStar Dale Robertson Buick and it's cool accessories. Somehow, I thought the Robertson Buick was like the Luci and Desi California 1955 Pontiac and there was a version with a figure of Dale and a steer horn hood ornament, also. Anyway, it would probably make a cool modification for someone to do !

What a terrible shame Ford didn't put this design into production....mind you I'm not so sure the look would have transferred onto the more squarish '64.

Very cool to see this car modeled.  One of our forum members, Rich Faber, had a 1/24 scale model built out of a Sports Roadster.

I was fortunate to know the owner of the car who squirled it away for 16 years before selling it to the guy who restored it in 2007.  It was auctioned at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale in January 2008 and recently sold this year at RM Sotheby's in Miami for $456K. Here's a few pictures of it almost 20 years ago.

Many years ago it was on display at the Blackhawk in Danville CA.  It's beautiful.

@perrone1 WOW!!! It's at $81 for a numbered LE of 400. I'll be interested to see the last second sniping. Even with an open production, it's a pretty well done model and I would expect it to be worth a lot more.

@rich-sufficool I sold mine on ebay a while back. The trim was separating and putting the parts back in place might have taxed my skills. I hope the buyer was able to repair it. Anyone else have these problems on this model? Note that the one on ebay also has loose trim along the top of the left fender.
