Dinky Toys No.749 Avro Vulcan Delta Wing Bomber.

Something a little different but which fits in this Topic area.

This is a Dinky Vulcan V Force atomic bomber that is extremely rare but which I have managed to acquire 6 times over the last 40 years.

Originally was made by Dinky Toys, Binns Road, Liverpool between 1955 through to 1956.

Only 500 of the original Dinky Super Toys planes with a wing span of 6 1/4" = 15,88 cm. made of aluminium were ever made and they were all exported to Canada.

The molds did not work well and only about 100 had the full wingtips, the others having to be machined to smooth out.

Here is my current one that I have kept. (Not for sale). It has the original wingtips and is in excellent condition but without the original box.

My last one I sold earned $1200 four years ago. It was in similar unboxed condition.

I remember Dinky made some airplanes, I even had one long, long ago.  I was not aware of the Vulcan.

Today, if you are interested in diecast airplanes, there is a very large selection of types in a wide range of scales.  They are detailed to the level of the best white metal cars and most resin cars in 1/43 scale.  I have models in both 1/72 scale and 1/48 scale.  I once showed a Mustang in this forum.  Let me know is you want to see anything else.  Hopefully, we are not violating any forum protocol when showing these.

Hi Ed,

Yes, I collect aircraft too, but not to the same extent. Also, my bias is British aircraft although I do have Mustangs. I have quite a number of the early Dinky Toys and other brands. Below are a Corgi Spitfire with a Corgi German Buzz Bomb V1. This one has family significance for me. One landed close to my grandparents in Lancashire on Christmas Eve, 1944. They were shaken but unhurt but others died. Spitfires were fast enough to shoot many of them down before they reached targets.

Likely The Diecast Zone won't mind the odd mention but there is not a Theme area that really suits. JK may have thoughts on protocols. This will be the last aircraft post from me until I find if they are acceptable.

That Vulcan looks great ! I have a number of plastic aircraft models, but only a small collection of diecast aircraft replicas. Like the tank/armored force diecasts available, the planes are really well done at a great price. These are the diecast planes I have presently : a MiG-3, P-40, Zero, Stuka and Corsair.

Nice selection Mike. I assume that these are all 1/72 scale. Impressive backgrounds.

Mike, nice planes. Besides scale, I was wondering which companies made them.

Thanks ! I think nearly all of these are "Forces of Valor", although the tooling may be shared among manufacturers. These were available at stores like Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target.

I wonder if Dinky made other V-Force bombers like the Valiant or Victor, or if they made a version of the later Vulcans with the Phase Two "kinked" wing ?

Hi Mike,

The Vulcan was the only V-Force bomber that DINKY made. Others were planed, I heard, but the failure of the molds on the Vulcan made them cancel the plans. Instead, they moved to a larger 1/72 series with moving parts. The Bonaza below is an example. Most popular in the new series was the Supermarine Spitfire.

Mike, if you are interesting in seeing the wide selection of diecast planes available, I suggest you look at the web site for Aikens Airplanes.  I bought most of my airplane models from them.
