LLEDO LAND SPEED LEGENDS:Spirit of America- Sonic 1 , 1965
Spirit of America was designed and driven by Craig Breedlove. This one varied from his original design by having four wheels instead of one, which disqualified it from the official Land Speed Record. Four wheels made it legal. Powered by a General Electric Turbo Jet Engine, this record runner was the first to not have power tranferred by the car wheels. At 8:10 am on November 15th, 1965, at Bonneville Salt Flats, the car flashed through its first run averaging 594 mph.. The second run was under 6 seconds for the measured mile, a record of 600.601 mph, a new World Record. Craig Breedlove was the first man in history to go over 600 on a land vehicle with four wheels. This record held until 1970.
Oooo, now we're getting into my top 3-5 favorites!
I have looked high and low for the Sonic 1 allegedly offered by Scaleworks. I've never found one, and I think Scaleworks was planning it but never produced it. I have the 3-wheel Spirit of America and the most recent one designed to go 1,000 MPH. The Sonic 1 would be a nice addition to my LSR collection.
That is a very nice collection, Marty. I'm missing that 1963 version: Had it but traded it in a weak moment.
