it was a year when Chrysler brands seemed to be bulbous in size.

Ah 1971, the year that Oldsmobile and Buick added back full-size station wagons to their lineups.  From 1965 to 1970 the largest wagons they had were the stretched wheelbase intermediates, the Buick Sport Wagon and the Olds Vista Cruiser.  Those clamshell tailgates were very cool, but I always wondered how well they would function if they were rear-ended.
