@jack-dodds This is a great piece of research Jack, and I particularly like your shot of the Norman Bel Geddes-esque 😃 gizmo, controlling the whole operation.

@georgeschire Too much of a good thing can't be bad!

Oh yes it can.  And in the case of the Butt Wart on that '58 Ford, it is over the top too much!  It's a distraction from an otherwise beautiful car.  It adds nothing to it all, except for me to shake my head and wonder why the owner would want to ruin the beauty of his car.

@georgeschire

I am not as negative about continental kits as some folks, but I agree with you for that 1958 Ford. It would look much nicer without it.

@georgeschire As a designer, (not automobiles sadly) I totally see where you are coming from. When a highly paid and expert team finally alight upon their best design solution, why splat an overdone marshmallow all over it?  Attitude ! Few things say F.U. Like chromed rear fender skirts and a gopping extension boasting an equally gopping, chromed spare.

As a friend used to put it, "with its balls dragging in the dust."  And seeing one of these behemoths taking a curve on soft, American suspension I see his meaning. It's brazen attitude: it's rock 'n' roll.

I've nothing to back up what I'm going say here, other than it's "my opinion".  My theory has always been that there are people everywhere that "need to be noticed", "they need to stand-out", "they need to have attention".  Those are the people in my opinion that can't just have a nice car, they have to have "the car" that is "outlandish", "different", or "completely out there".

Sadly, most of these folks don't realize that they're getting attention, but not for the right reasons.  Or perhaps that is their goal too.  Nine times out of ten, I will walk right past a nice car that is all goofed up with silly modifications and distractions from its original beauty.  The '58 Ford in this discussion is one of those cars.  I'll see it from the front, be in awe of it, and then when I see the hideous growth on the rear end, I will walk away from it completely shaking my head in disbelief that a beautiful car has been disfigured.

Or...maybe they just like continental kits and accessories. If an owner enjoys modifying his car, who am I to question his taste or motivations?

Once again.....variety is what keeps our car hobby exciting and controversial.  Everyone has their likes and dislikes and it's all good.  But I don't like connies....so there ya go!  Lol.
