PIX: Sure, heck yes. The Green Parrot cnr Taranaki & Wakefield Streets.
Te Aro in Wellington our small countries small capital city.
The Green Parrot seems like it's been where it is for all of my life. Well, it has been and here's the reason why.
Opened in 1926 by Richard ALfred Eckner, then taken over in 1930 by American Merchant Seaman, Mr Eddie, who jumped ship to establish himself as the second owner.
Sold again in 1932 and taken over by, Big Tony Marinovich who introduced the basis of the establishments current menue. Big Tony also had installed the grill he built made from melted down gun barrels still in use today.
Always crowded, a favourite of night hawkes still, it was never more crowded than between 1939 and 1946 when both American and New Zealand servicemen packed the place out every night of the week.
The Green Parrot is still a favorite with locals and visitors alike attracted by the old style atmosphere and generous servings of food. It's impossible to leave the Green Parrot still feeling hungry.
