HERE'S MY REAL LIFE FOOTBALL STORY

After an 8th grade experience of being told to get off the "line of scrimmage", and asking my gym teacher Mr. Saszma, "How do I know I'm on it if I can't see it", and then being told I was being difficult.  I admittedly became very frustrated.

I told Saszma that he's the one that was having a problem if he sees a line that isn't there.  Saszma then told me again, that I was standing on it.  I looked down, I saw no line.  He sent a note home to my Dad, saying that I was disrupting gym class.

Dad asked me what I was doing that was disruptive, and I told him nothing, but was accused of being on a line on the field, when there wasn't one.  My dad replied with, "What?".  So I told him the story how Saszma sees a line, and that I'm standing on it, and I asked him how am I supposed to know I'm on it, if I don't see a line that isn't there.

Dad tried to explain it to me, and said the line really isn't there.  I told him that I can't and won't play a game where people see things that aren't there.

Needless to say, football has never been a sport I've watched or cared about.

Saturday, while at a birthday party, I had a chance to get Minnesota Viking (#9 from 1977 to 1989) Tommy Kramer's autograph.  I shared with him my 8th grade experience and he chuckled at the story.  I'm sure since he played the game, he too, saw that line that isn't there and he's happy I wasn't a teammate.

The retelling of this memory brought many laughs.

As a side note to my football story above, whenever my wife and I do have a game on TV, she always points out to me where the line of scrimmage is.  For TV they "paint" the lines on the field...however, as she points out, they are not really "painted" on the field, but done so with cameras for us viewers at home.

Yes the highlighted lines and arrows, etc. used by NFL commentators in replays are the best part of the game for me.

Exactly.  LOL, in hindsight, I'm sure I shortened poor Mr. Saszma's school coaching career.  Someday I'll share my school wrestling story that also involved him.  It's a hoot.  Smile

I'm with you George. I never could see those lines either. I stuck to what you call soccer where all the lines were obvious.

For me, but not most Americans. They use that weird oval ball for their football.

I know, Canadians do too, but we changed the rules somewhat for our oval ball game.

LOL.  Yes we Canadians made the game 3 downs rather than 4 and turned it into a much less interesting spectator sport.

I've always been bothered that Football is a one hour game that takes over three hours to play.  One of the reasons I've always liked baseball is that it is a three hour game (unless extra innings are needed), that is played in 3 hours.

@georgeschire George;  I love both sports but much prefer to watch NFL football.  I should add that I prefer watching baseball live though because of the insane noise level in the football audience.  Maybe I'm just getting old.

Having attended games in all 30 major league baseball parks and another dozen or more of previous baseball stadiums, I guess you can conclude that I choose baseball over football.  For sure, I understand baseball more.  Smile
